    The Awakening Giant

Did you know that in the colonial era between the 1900s and 1960s:

Busoga was known as a food basket for Uganda and the wider East African region because of its fertile soils, favorable rainfall, and proximity to Lake Victoria and the Nile, which facilitated the production of abundant cash crops such as Cotton and sugarcane and food crops such as maize, millet, cassava, beans, groundnuts, bananas, and rice.

So Busoga wasn’t only feeding its people; it supported Kampala, Jinja’s industries, and neighboring regions, making it an agricultural and industrial hub until degradation, overpopulation, and land-use changes reduced its productivity.

Busoga, once the food basket it was, is no longer that. However, efforts like the Running Out Of Trees Campaign and the upcoming National Tree Planting Day NTPD2025 at Busoga College Mwiri aim to restore its agriculture and ecological health.

Over 40,000 assorted indigenous and Fruit tree seedlings are to be planted at the host school for this year’s National Tree Planting Day and the neighboring areas.
